Guest Artist: Mardi Wood Opens at High Desert Gallery February 2012

High Desert Gallery is excited to announce guest artist, Mardi Wood, February 17 to April 11, 2012. “A Story...”, exhibition is featured at High Desert Gallery, 10 NW Minnesota Avenue at The Oxford Hotel in downtown Bend, Oregon.  

Mardi Wood's ceramic work is the result of a process developed over many years of making. Evidence of the artist's hands can be felt in her work. The balance and subtle weight of each piece have been created by fine adjustments made at every step of construction. Inspired by her roots in the Northwest and her family home on the Columbia River, Woods' vessels are painted with layers of glaze and oxides built up during repeated firings. Woods now lives in Northern California, and has a second residence in Italy. Images of Maremma cattle, drawn from the Italian landscape, often appear in her recent work.

Off to Vegas Baby! Frame The Future with High Desert Frameworks! -- Bend Oregon

(PPFA) international convention held this year with the West Coast Art and Frame Show.

Just a quick note of our hours (scroll below) as well as a couple events of note if you are in the area and wish to join in on the fun!  We hope that you enjoy all the fun and spirit of the Christmas season while visiting downtown Bend.  Plan on stopping by the gallery as we would love to see you and show you all the new work!

Guest Artists, Holly and Randal Smithey Open at High Desert Gallery – December 16, 2011

High Desert Gallery is excited to announce Central Oregon guest artists, Holly and Randal Smithey, December 16 to February 15, 2012. “Balance”, exhibition is featured at High Desert Gallery, 10 NW Minnesota Avenue at The Oxford Hotel in downtown Bend, Oregon.

     

From their studio in Tumalo, Randal and Holly Smithey create abstract works in steel, bronze, and copper. They hand form, forge, and fabricate pieces using texture, shape, and color to speak the language of rhythm and balance. In each piece they strive to achieve a union of independent energies around a common center. The shape tells a story, inspired by a particular vision and the patina tells another guided by the shape. There is always an interaction between the shape and the patterns created by the patina. One influenced by the other like a river or a road is guided by a landscape.

The Palette opens at High Desert Gallery: Bend Oregon

Come celebrate with us as we host “The Palette”, an group exhibition showcasing our fine art painters and glass artist, Cheyenne Malcolm. About Cheyenne Malcolm: Cheyenne has worked with many prolific glass artists and schools such as David Garcia, Pilchuck Glass School and Pratt Institute. In 2008, Cheyenne opened his own glass studio and has found his own voice in the fine art glass world.

Cross Culture Caminata Offers a Bend Spin on the Dia De los Muertos Tradition

High Desert Gallery is pleased to participate in the upcoming Day of the Dead Art Celebration and hope to see you this weekend! In it’s third iteration the Cross Culture: Bike + Art Love puts a new spin on the event to kick off the Day of the Dead Cyclocross Festival on Friday, October 28th in Downtown Bend, Oregon. 

Work by Central Oregon Artist, Lloyd McMullen will be featured in addition to tasting with Oregon Spirit Distillers.  A Hoot For Sure!

Cross Culture matches artists and local businesses for a special event exploring Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), the cultural celebration of the lives and memories of the deceased. “We’re thrilled to expand on the Cross Culture concept to give a nod to the traditions of Latin culture with interpretive altars and Day of the Dead inspired artworks” said event founder Cassondra Schindler. 

The Cross Culture Caminata offers a unique interpretation of the Dia de los Muertos tradition of parading through the streets with shrines and altars. Rather than watching the art move past, participants are invited to walk from one art installation to the next while meeting a talented line-up of local artists hosted by downtown Bend businesses.

About Lloyd McMullen:  Lloyd’s curious nature is reflected in eclectic two- and three-dimensional mixed media art. A journalism degree and lifelong love of reading and writing creep into paintings and sculptures. Acrylic paintings are layered with deep transparent glazes to embed objects and color within the work. “My work is about time, seeking glimpses of history revealed in simple objects. 

McMullen is a Print Associate at Atelier 6000, a fine art prints studio and artists’ workshop in Bend, Oregon; one of the founding members of Artists Local 101, a Central Oregon-based contemporary art group; Visual Arts Program Director at Young Musicians & Artists, Willamette University-based program; and, until recently an advisory board member of Cascades a&e and member of the 135 UP! gallery in Bend.

Guest Artist, Simona Foggitt opens at High Desert Gallery: Bend Oregon

High Desert Gallery is excited to announce Pacific Northwest guest artist, painter Simona Foggitt, October 14 to December 14, 2011. “Alchemy”, exhibition is featured at High Desert Gallery, 10 NW Minnesota Avenue at The Oxford Hotel in downtown Bend, Oregon. 

Simona Foggitt's architectural inspiration is constantly at work within her when she paints. The result is an overwhelming urge to construct, plan and juxtapose various elements and forms together to create a "space" that instead of clashing, is at peace with all the foreign elements paint and metal that she has created together. 

The early phases of a painting are very thought intensive. Much detailed planning is involved, based on an initial vision of elements and the manner in which they will work together harmoniously in the final stages of the piece. In other words, which metal form will best harmonize the painting. The painting is impossible to paint without these forms already in place as the one cannot live without the other. 

In this series of paintings I was particularly interested in creating very soft yet saturated fields of color in contrast to the bold metal elements. I put in much effort to achieve a particular richness and depth in the application of the multitude of transparent tinted glazes, which comprise the field of the piece. For me,painting in the abstract, is simply the expression of another, perhaps less familiar language. These intangible thoughts and inspirations are all about color, form and harmony that exist within our everyday lives and surroundings.

About Judy Hoiness: A collection of watercolor and acrylic paintings on canvas of scenic and historical areas in Central and Eastern Oregon by fourth generation Oregonian and Bend resident for forty years. Judy paints from memory in the studio recalling her impressions and emotions that she had while she was exploring the land. This allows her freedom to select unusual hues, invent shapes and textures yet capturing the essence of the place. Such Oregon areas as Hoogie Doogie Mountain, Shoofly Creek, Kinzua and Rome, are just a few unusual places painted for this show.

About Thomas Hughes: His series of mechanical theaters is a recent extension of his longtime career as a furniture maker. He has now ventured into a more expressive medium, the sculptures allow him to explore his interests which include: birds, engineering, kinetic movement, wood carving, folk art, roadside attractions, and circuses just to name a few.
